Air Quality

We pride ourselves on having fresh, clean mountain air to breathe. But during wildfire season, prevailing winds can carry smoke to our area from other parts of California or the country, making it unpleasant and unhealthy to be outside.

Summer Power Outage Preparedness

Visitor's Guide to Power Outages (PSOMs)

This summer, to protect Truckee-Tahoe from wildfire, energy companies plan to implement power shutoffs (PSOMs) during extreme weather events. During an outage, it may not be possible to get gas, ice or other commodities. Restaurants and shops may be closed, and cell phone towers could experience high congestion. Use the links below to know what to expect and how to prepare before and during a power outage.

Get Notified Before an Outage

Wildfire safety power outages (PSOMs) will typically come with advance notice of 24-48 hours. Here’s how you can find out if a PSOM is happening:

  • Bookmark or Google Truckee Travel Alert.
  • Sign up for Nixle Alerts to get texts from the Truckee Fire Protection District.
  • Sign up for CodeRED to get emergency alerts by text, phone call, or email from local Nevada County emergency response teams.
  • If you own a home in Truckee, update your TDPUD contact information to get email and text alerts ahead of a PSOM.
