The Quiet Season That Has a Lot Going On

Summer gets the buzz. Winter gets the snow. But ask a local about their favorite time of year in Truckee, and you might hear a different answer: fall.

The days are still warm, the mornings turn crisp, trails get quieter and the first flashes of gold begin appearing in the mountains. And while the pace slows down, the calendar doesn’t. September and October bring outdoor films under the stars, mountain bike events, Oktoberfests, food and drink celebrations, dark-sky experiences and some of the best excuses of the year to spend a weekend in Truckee.

Ride While the Trails Are Prime

Cooler temperatures, quieter trails and miles of singletrack make fall an especially good time to get out on two wheels.

Make a weekend of it around the Great Trail Race on September 26, which takes riders and runners from Truckee to Tahoe City along a point-to-point adventure through the mountains. Younger riders can get in on the action, too, with GROM Bike Clinics at Tahoe Donner continuing throughout September and October.

Or skip the starting line altogether. Pick a trail, pack a layer and spend the day riding beneath changing aspens before settling in for a well-earned après.

Eat + Drink Your Way Through Fall

October is an especially delicious time to be in Truckee.

All month long, Taste of Truckee celebrates the town's food scene with special menus and offers from 30+ participating restaurants. It's a chance to try somewhere new, revisit an old favorite or build an entire fall weekend around what you want to eat next.

And October brings a couple of Truckee's biggest food-and-drink celebrations along with it.

On October 3, the Downtown Truckee Wine, Walk & Shop takes over historic downtown, with wine tastings, food pairings and special offerings at more than 30 participating venues. Wander from stop to stop, explore local shops along the way and make an afternoon of it.

Then raise a stein at Truckee Oktoberfest, October 9–11. The weekend brings craft beer, live music, outdoor adventures, family activities, games, food specials, yoga, hikes and more throughout historic Truckee.

Together, they make October a pretty compelling time to come hungry—and stay for the weekend.

Shop the Change of Seasons

Fall may still bring plenty of sunshine, but around Truckee, ski season is never far from mind.

The Start Haus Annual Ski Consignment Sale returns over Labor Day Weekend with pre-owned skis, winter gear and mountain bike deals, while the Tahoe Mountain Sports Rep Sample Sale offers sample-sale pricing on outdoor apparel, footwear and gear.

Add a wander through historic downtown Truckee for locally owned shops, galleries and gear stores, and you might head home considerably more prepared for winter than when you arrived.

Stay Up Past Dark

Fall nights in Truckee are worth staying up for.

From October 1–4, Keep It Dark Astrotourism Weekend turns our attention skyward with four days of stargazing, astrophotography, creativity and dark-sky experiences around Truckee.

Peer deep into the night sky through powerful telescopes at the Dark Skies Cosmoarium, see the Sierra after dark through the lens of local photographers, learn to capture the Milky Way during a night photography workshop, or slow down and find inspiration beneath the stars during a dark-skies writing workshop.

With crisp fall nights, earlier sunsets and some seriously starry skies overhead, there may be no better time to experience Truckee after dark.

Catch Truckee Turning Gold

Some of the best things happening in fall aren't on the calendar at all.

Aspens turn brilliant shades of yellow and gold. Trails and overlooks get quieter. Donner Lake reflects the changing landscape. Warm afternoons give way to sweater-worthy evenings.

Take a hike. Go for a scenic drive. Ride your bike. Bring your camera. Grab lunch outside while patio season is still hanging on.

And don't worry too much about checking everything off a list. Fall is a good time to leave a little room for whatever looks good along the way.
