Don’t just rush from one attraction to another. Truckee is like a fine wine; it must be savored slowly to really enjoy it. Immerse yourself in the moment and be present in what you’re experiencing. Listen to the birds singing in the tall forest canopy. Take in the aromatic smells of wildflowers blooming along the trail. Enjoy a taste of local culture by sipping on a locally brewed ale on one of Truckee's patios. Go up in altitude to change your attitude with this Truckee itinerary for mindful travel.

What Is Mindful Travel?

The definition of mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindful travel takes this concept and applies it to HOW we travel. Instead of ticking off “to do” items, immerse yourself in Truckee’s culture and just go with the flow. It’s not just applying the “Leave No Trace” principle but how we as travelers can leave the destination even better than when we came AND still enjoy ourselves. Here’s a few ideas on how you can do just that.

Go Car Free

Reduce your carbon footprint and get a more authentic experience of what makes Truckee special. Breathe in the fresh mountain air as you ride a bike along the scenic paved paths to our historic downtown. Skip the hassle and stress by taking our FREE bus and shuttle network to access hikes, mountain biking, or even the beach. To make it easy for you, we’ve put together this guide on getting around Truckee, including to and from the airport without a car.

Drink Truckee Tap

Skip the middleman and fill up a reusable water bottle with that oh-so delicious Truckee tap water. Truckee’s water comes from the Martis Valley groundwater basin and is arguably some of the best in the world. The water is typically 500-1,000+ years old, requires very little treatment, and comes out of the tap cold and refreshing. If you didn’t bring your own reusable water bottle, buy one from one of Truckee's many local shops.

Get Grounded With A Yoga Class

Set your mind in the right state for your vacation in Truckee. You come to Truckee to get away from it all and yet your mind is running and your body is wound up tighter than a twisted rubber band. Truckee yoga studios give you the opportunity to unwind those daily stresses and become part of the community even for a day. This is just one of many ways you can Unplug & Unwind on Your Truckee Getaway.

Meditate On The Donner Lake Docks

Get some good vibes from the shores of Donner Lake. In real estate, they always say “location, location, location” but it’s also true for meditation. The gentle sound of water lapping against the shore is very well-suited for meditation – it will calm your mind and inspire you to remain in the present moment. Afterwards, walk down to the Little Truckee Ice Creamery for some of the most delicious ice cream you’ve ever had.

Stock Up Your Vacation Rental With Local Produce

Be the next top chef of your vacation rental and order online via Tahoe Food Hub. Truckee has become the shining beacon for other mountain towns to give both visitors and residents access to food from small family farms within 150-miles of North Lake Tahoe. You can either visit their store Farmacy or better yet make an order online. What you’ll get is produce that has been “harvested to order” to provide you the peak freshness. Fruits, veggies, pastured meats, eggs, and even specialty products such as pasta and preserves are available to you.

Enjoy Farm To Mountain Cuisine

Truckee is home to some of the best mountain cuisine in the country with an array of award-winning restaurants. How is this possible? Truckee’s location is unique in that it’s a gateway to outdoor mountain recreation YET at the doorstep of America’s heartland for agriculture. This gives our restaurants the opportunity to source organic food, produce, meats, and fish locally.

Give Back To Truckee As Much As You Enjoy

They say the secret to happiness is helping others. The trails, waterways, and community all need our help to ensure it can be loved not just today but for your children, great grandchildren, and even your great great grandchildren. Don a helmet, gloves, and hardhat to join one of Truckee-Tahoe's many local non-profit organizations for a trail work day. Have your family become watershed scientists via Truckee’s Adopt-a-Stream program. In the end, you’ll get to enjoy some time outside AND feel good.

Alex Silgalis

Born and raised as a flat lander in Chicagoland, Alex spent his summers working to save up for a season pass to the local hill along with any trips out West or beyond he could squeeze in. It was during his travels, both as a kid & an adult, Alex discovered his inspiration for Local Freshies® . His idea was to create the No. 1 Web site providing the local scoop on where to eat, drink & play in mountain towns throughout North America. When he’s not writing and executing marketing strategies for small businesses & agencies, he’s in search of the deepest snow in the winter and tackiest dirt in the summer alongside the love of his life and business partner, Jaime Pirozzi.
