Do I need a fishing license to fish in Truckee-Tahoe?

Yes, all anglers 16 and older need a California fishing license. Resident and non-resident licenses are available, with annual and short-term options.

What fish species can I catch in Truckee-Tahoe?

The areas lakes and streams are primarily known for for trout fishing, including Rainbow, Brown, Cutthroat and Brook trout. Local reservoirs also contain smallmouth bass, bluegill, and other warm water species.

Donner Lake and area reservoirs also hold Mackinaw (lake trout) and kokanee salmon. Some lower elevation waters contain smallmouth bass and other warm-water species.

What fishing gear should I bring to Truckee?

For fly fishing, a versatile 9-foot 5-weight rod works well for most of our rivers. For lake fishing, spinning gear with 4-8 pound test line works well. Don't forget polarized sunglasses, waders for river fishing, and layered clothing for changing mountain weather.
