We choose to live small to live big. We live in a 450 square foot studio where we work – so a carbon-free work commute! The advantages environmentally of living small are obvious, and some may think it comes with quality of life sacrifices – but for us, the opposite is true. Living small allows us to not expend our time and energy tending to space and possessions – allowing us to pursue what really matters.
I make art which enlivens the senses and brings the transformational power of AWE + Nature to indoor spaces. It’s a biophilic approach: I love thinking of it as oxygen for your walls. I believe that loving, deepening and sustaining our soul's connection with Nature is key to sustaining our world.
My wife Lynn and I have been working on cutting down on food waste. Since we have started composting, it is amazing how much less trash ends up in our trash can each week. We try our best to eat vegetarian. We also buy fruit, veggies and stuff from Imperfect Produce. We also love planting new flowers in the garden each spring for the bees, birds and other insects - plus, who doesn't love flowers.
Every day I imagine what the world will look like in the year 2100 when my son Ansel will be 85 years old. This helps keep my guided to stay on point to help protect the environment and keep our mountains clean for our future generations. I support the Nevada County Energy Action Plan Community Workgroup to advance community resiliency.
I make my own vegetable broth by reusing veggie scraps, like onion skin, carrot tops, and tomato heads. I keep a bag in the freezer to store the scraps, and when it gets full, I boil it down into stock. It’s a great, flavorful addition to almost any dish!
My family and I participate in as many community cleanups as we can, we pick up garbage on our dog walks, have a backyard compost and e-bike to school and work when the weather cooperates!
I spin a ginormous compost drum every day with vegetable scraps.
I love getting to Truckee on clean energy with my electric vehicle. Since I make many trips, I also was able to help a Bay Area nonprofit take some kids to the snow. They needed gear, so I posted on Truckee social media and got loads of donated gear for some new snow lovers to get to experience snow for the first time.
I grow herbs in my kitchen from seed and have an outdoor container garden with leafy greens.
Little changes can makes big waves! I try my best living green by reducing single use plastics and picking up trash whenever I see it. Especially while paddling! Help keep our beaches and beautiful lake clean.
Picking up trash made me aware of our impact on this planet. To reduce this impact I compost, bring my own containers, and buy used whenever I can. In 2018 I took the next step in climate protection by becoming a Truckee Town Council member to create the most kick-ass climate action plan possible for our community!
