Where Nature and History Meet

Within a short drive of downtown Truckee, you’ll find some of California’s most scenic and storied state parks. These protected lands invite visitors to hike forested trails, explore lakeside beaches, learn about early pioneers, and witness the changing beauty of the Sierra across all seasons.

Each park offers a different way to connect with nature, with history, and with the rhythms of mountain life.

Donner Memorial State Park

This park tells the sobering story of the Donner Party and early emigrant routes through the Sierra. Combine a morning hike with a visit to the museum to truly understand the resilience it took to cross these mountains.

Distance: 2 miles from downtown Truckee
Highlights:

  • Emigrant Trail Museum & Pioneer Monument
  • Interpretive trails and signage
  • Shoreline access to Donner Lake
  • Great for picnicking, walking, and cross-country skiing in winter
Kings Beach State Recreation Area

Kings Beach State Recreation Area

Come early in summer for a prime beach spot and spectacular lake views. The large lawn and facilities make it a favorite for casual lake days.

Distance: 13 miles southeast
Highlights:

  • Popular Lake Tahoe beach with paddleboard rentals and shaded picnic areas
  • Located in the heart of Kings Beach, near shops and restaurants
  • Gentle lake entry, ideal for families

Burton Creek State Park

If you're looking to escape the crowds, Burton Creek offers serenity among tall pines and a chance to spot wildlife. Great for shoulder-season hiking.

Distance: 17 miles south
Highlights:

  • Forested trail network just outside of Tahoe City
  • Less crowded than other parks, ideal for peaceful nature walks
  • Open to hikers, mountain bikers, and snowshoers

Sugar Pine Point State Park

A gem on Tahoe’s western shore, this park blends history and natural beauty. It’s also a pristine and accessible winter destination thanks to its groomed Nordic ski trails and quiet shoreline.

Distance: 29 miles southwest
Highlights:

  • Hellman-Ehrman Mansion tours (seasonal)
  • Lakefront trails and beaches
  • Cross-country ski center in winter
  • Rich cultural and natural history

D.L. Bliss State Park

D.L. Bliss is one of the most photogenic parks on the lake. Get there early to hike or swim in Tahoe’s clearest waters. Parking fills quickly in summer.

Distance: 32 miles southwest
Highlights:

  • Access to the famous Rubicon Trail
  • Crystal-clear coves and dramatic cliffs
  • Popular summer beach spot
  • Panoramic views of Lake Tahoe

Note: D.L. Bliss is partially closed for day use into summer 2025 due to ongoing waterline infrastructure replacement.

  • Pack out all trash, even biodegradable waste.
  • Stay on trails to protect fragile lakefront ecosystems.
  • Never feed wildlife.
  • Follow parking and fire regulations (especially in summer).
