Highlights & Experiences
The Backside
This area is known for its quieter slopes, advanced terrain, and excellent snow quality.
Sawtooth Ridge Hike-To Terrain
The backside also has an interesting zone called "Sawtooth Ridge" which has in-bounds hike-to terrain that is great on a powder day. This gate-accessed area offers powder stashes and more challenging terrain for those willing to earn their turns.
World-Class Terrain Parks
Find multiple parks for every skill level. It is also home to the Burton Snowboard Academy.
Village Ice Rink
The central hub for families and après-ski, the ice rink is surrounded by fire pits, shops, and dining.
Lookout Mountain Glades
Northstar’s best-kept secret for expert skiers seeking tree runs and powder pockets.
Tōst Champagne Experience
Enjoy a complimentary champagne (or cider) toast daily at a scenic mid-mountain location on East Ridge. For something extra, the Platinum Tōst package includes reserved seating, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, charcuterie, and s’mores.
Helpful Tips
- Plan Ahead for Parking: Village View Lots require reservations on weekends and peak days from 7 AM to noon. It’s free with 4+ people or $20 for fewer. After noon, parking is free and open. Weekdays? No reservation needed.
- Castle Peak = Reliable & Free: Castle peak lot is always free, with no reservations required. Shuttles run continuously until 10 PM on weekends and 6 PM on weekdays. On weekdays, the lot opens only if Village View fills.
- Truckee Park & Ride: Avoid parking altogether by taking the free weekend shuttle from downtown Truckee. It's especially helpful during holiday periods.
- Preferred Paid Lot: This lot is closest to the village, but comes with a price tag. It's $25 on weekdays, $50 on weekends and holidays. Reservations are required during peak times (7 AM–3 PM).
- Ice Skating at the Village: Bring your own skates and enjoy the outdoor ice rink for free. Rentals are available on-site, and the rink is especially charming in the evening with fire pits and lights.
- Download the EpicMix App: Get real-time updates on lift lines, grooming, and trail openings to make the most of your day.
- Wind-Proof Your Plans: Unlike other Tahoe resorts, Northstar's tree-protected terrain stays open during storms, making it your best bet on windy days.
- Skip the Gondola Crowd: For quicker access to mid-mountain on busy days, consider taking the Village Express lift instead of the main gondola.
- Family-Friendly Village Navigation: You have to walk through most of the village to get to the gondola which takes you up to "Mid Mountain"—embrace this! The Village walk becomes part of the experience, with shops, cafes, and activities that keep non-skiers entertained.
- Early Season Advantage: Northstar excels early in the season thanks to superior snowmaking and grassy terrain that requires minimal natural snow. It’s often among the first Tahoe resorts to offer multiple open runs, making it a reliable pick for early-season laps.
- Free Transportation: TART offers a complimentary, regional shuttle service to and from Truckee, and Northstar also offers a free Dial-A-Ride service for guests staying in Northstar.
- Explore the Backside: This is a favorite among experienced skiers and riders for its open runs, glades, and typically lighter crowds. It's especially good in late morning when the sun softens the snow.
- End on a Scenic Note: For a peaceful final run, take Logger’s Loop back to the base. It’s a quieter, tree-lined route with great views to wrap up the day.
