Any wheelchair or mobility device that meets both parts of the legal definition of a wheelchair (36 CFR 212.1, Forest Service Manual 2305.05 and ADA Title V, Section 508c, for use in Wilderness areas) is allowed to be used anywhere foot travel is allowed on the National Forest System. Learn more.
While most hiking and biking trails may not comfortably accommodate wheelchairs, adaptive bikes, and other mobility devices, two new state of the art dirt trails in Truckee have been specifically designed for all users: Compass Skills Loop and Ridgeline Nature Trail.
Along with these two dirt trails, the Tahoe National Forest offers hundreds of miles of scenic dirt and gravel roads for riding. Adaptive mountain bikes will be best suited for this terrain. For route ideas, check out these Truckee Tahoe Gravel courses.
The first all-inclusive, universally designed mountain bike loop in Truckee-Tahoe is open for riders!
Located at the Sawtooth Trailhead, the Compass Skills Loop has been thoughtfully constructed to facilitate mountain biking skills development for all riders, including those on adaptive mountain bikes (aMTB).
The one-mile, five foot wide trail has a progression of features for all skill levels, helping riders gain skills to ride safely and build confidence. It's suitable for kids, adults, and adaptive riders at beginner and intermediate levels.
The trail is a project of the Truckee Trails Foundation, designed by Steve Wentz of Momentum Trail Concepts, and sponsored by Visit Truckee-Tahoe's Sustainable Truckee initiative.
Beginning at the Sawtooth Trailhead, the Ridgeline Nature Loop is a flat, one-mile, dirt trail that's perfect for those seeking peaceful meander in the Tahoe National Forest.
It's suitable for people of all ages and abilities, and perfect for families looking for an easy hike with young kiddos. The loop is ADA accessible, accommodating wheel chairs, strollers, and strider bikes.
Be sure to stop at the halfway point and take in gorgeous views of Truckee, Castle Peak, and Donner Summit at the scenic overlook. Learn more & view map.

Achieve Tahoe provides year-round outdoor recreation activities for people with cognitive, sensory, and physical disabilities. The organization can serve just about anyone with any disability. They focus on health, confidence, and independence so that the experience people have is long-lasting and carries over into other areas of their life.
Join Achieve Tahoe for private lessons and guided tours throughout the year. They offer skiing, snowboarding, climbing, archery, equestrian, sailing, paddlesports, waterskiing, and military programs. All offerings have been carefully considered to ensure the safety and accessibility of participants, and there are hikes for all abilities.
Tahoe Donner Cross Country Center (TDXC) is proud to partner with “Ski for Light,” an international organization dedicated to providing skiing opportunities for visually impaired individuals. There are 26.6 miles of beautiful, scenic paved trails in Truckee for walking, biking, running, or pushing a stroller. These trails are wheelchair accessible and suitable for all abilities. Trails are plowed and snow-free in winter.
Donner Memorial State Park is a beautiful park located on the eastern shore of Donner Lake, just minutes from downtown Truckee. With scenic beaches, trails, and a state of the art Visitor Center, there are a variety of experiences offered for all users seeking outdoor time in nature and the opportunity to learn about Truckee-Tahoe's natural and cultural history. The park provides accessible camping, picnicking, trails, and a fully accessible Visitor Center.
An accessible half mile loop trail along the banks of Donner Creek near the Creek Campground that starts near the Pioneer Monument.
An accessible out-and-back trail along the south shore of Donner Lake measuring 1.37 miles each way. The trail offers great views of the lake and access to shoreline recreation such as beaches and picnicking.
The Truckee Bike Park is free to the public, open from sunrise to sunset (weather permitting) seven days a week during summer months. The Park has something for everyone - beginner to advanced jump lines, sweet flow lines, and the smoothest strider/pump track for all skill levels to progress. Family friendly and great for kids!

The Sky Tavern Mountain Bike Park offers an inclusive experience for all riders. Its trails are eMTB and adaptive bike friendly with options for all types of riders and bikes. Explore an assortment of signed, single-direction trails and skills areas. And be sure to check out the beginner and adaptive bike-friendly High Five, a top-to-bottom, widely sweeping, machine-built inclusive trail. The first purpose-built adaptive mountain bike trail of its kind.

High Fives Foundation is a Truckee non-profit that focuses on preventing life-changing injuries and provides resources and hope if they happen. They help athletes pay for adaptive sports equipment, supply financial support for different rehabilitation resources, raise awareness about accident prevention and safety, and much more.
Truckee Tahoe Gravel returns to Truckee on Saturday, June 29, 2024, and this year, it's back on the grass at Riverview Sports Park! Choose from three varied routes through the dirt and gravel roads of the Tahoe National Forest - Easy: 26.7 miles, Moderate: 67.2 miles, Hard: 104 miles. Scoring ends at Boca, so after a big push, enjoy a casual ride back on the Legacy Trail for the post-race festival fun.
