Skateboarding’s history is deeply rooted in surfing. With no waves on the horizon, the need to ‘surf’ was too great so skateboarding was born in Hawaii to surf the land instead. Truckee’s skate scene is similar to Hawaii except for its frozen variety. Instead of waves, it was the deprivation of snow in the summer that has led many to pick up the sport of skateboarding. It now goes hand in hand with its winter cousin - snowboarding.
Truckee Skatepark
Transitions are flawless, the coping is excellent, and the layout is incredible, making it arguably one of the nicest skateparks in the region. While most skateparks’ surfaces contrast their surroundings, Truckee's Skatepark is the opposite. The concrete is custom colored with a reddish brown hue that matches the natural environment. This along with the smooth, steep transitions make it feel as though you’re skating the Sierra topography. Street skaters will enjoy the obstacles along the perimeter. This includes a rail, ledges, and a couple cement boxes.
Things To Know
Bikes are not allowed in the skatepark, but you’ll find within the same complex the Truckee Bike Park with terrain specifically built for bikes.
Boreal Mountain (Woodward Tahoe)
In the winter, Boreal is a freestyle haven for snowboarders and skiers, but in the summer, it blossoms into a skatepark mecca. Boasting three skateparks built for freedom, flow and not just skating — scooters and bikes are welcome, too. Everywhere you look, you’ll see concrete bowls, ledges, wall rides, mini ramps — a skater's delight. You can “drop in” for a 2 hour session, or better yet sign up your kids for a summer camp at Woodward Tahoe. Just one of the many summer camps that cover the full spectrum of activities in Truckee.

The Future Looks Bright - New Skatepark In The Works
Due to the popularity of Truckee’s current skatepark, there’s a need for another, even bigger one in town. A grassroots passionate group of community members have created a non-profit called the Steve “Rocker” Anderson Memorial Skatepark. The goal is to build a 25,000 square foot park in memory of their friend Steve “Rocker” Anderson. Since they started crowdfunding, they’ve received over $350,000 in donations, but there’s still another $650,000 needed. At this point, it’s mainly a funding issue. All patrons and participants can do their part to help and keep Rockers’ memory alive by making a donation.
