Plastic isn’t invited to this party! In fact, Truckee’s so serious about reducing waste that the Town recently passed a Single-Use Foodware Ban, meaning ALL single-use products – think styrofoam boxes, plastic bags, napkins, “eco-friendly” bamboo straws, and compostable paper utensils – will no longer be available at Truckee restaurants, food service establishments, coffee shops, bakeries, and bars.
When it comes to protecting Truckee’s beautiful natural environment, preventing litter, and keeping trash out of landfills, choosing to REDUCE WASTE is the way to go.
Here’s what you can do:
- Bring Reusable Bottles, Bags, Utensils (& Use Them!) - Reduce the amount of waste you create by using reusable products. Remember to keep reusable bags in your car for groceries, bring a reusable coffee mug to coffee shops, refill your reusable water bottle with Truckee tap, and pack reusable utensils for lunch on the slopes.
- Order Takeout in Truckee's Reusable "Green Box" - Hate seeing single-use takeout boxes? Us too. Use a reusable green box instead. The container is accepted at nine restaurants in Truckee. Make sure to request your meal in a “Reusable Green Box” and enjoy! When done, rinse the Green Box and bring it back to trade for a clean one.
- Compost Locally - About 25% of landfills are food scraps, according to the EPA, and when those organics decompose in an anaerobic environment, they produce potent greenhouse gases like methane and nitrous oxide. The good news is Truckee has four convenient compost dropoff locations, accessible year-round. Store compost in the freezer and drop off at the end of your trip!
